I took the Hunter Safety Course several years ago and need to get my Possession and Acquisition License. Do I have to go through the class again?
It is not necessary for you to take the class again. You have a couple of options. If you took the class at our club after 2004 (?) we may still have a copy of your test results on file. For a fee of $25.00 we can research our files and make a copy of your test results for you to use to apply for your license. Otherwise you can challenge the course by taking a test that consists of 50
questions both true and false and multiple choice. The test also involves a practical test which you will do with a trained instructor. The challenge takes about 50 minutes to an hour and you can schedule an appointment anytime between 9:00am and 3:00pm Monday through Friday. The cost of the challenge is $75.00.
I had an Possession Only License and let it lapse, how do I get my PAL?
The easiest way is to challenge the test which you can do at our club.
I lost my Hunter Safety Card, how do I get a new one?
Contact the SAFE Organization.
I would like to take the Hunter Safety Course but I can't make it twice a week what can I do?
You can do an online course though the SAFE Organization
I have my PAL can I go hunting even though I haven't taken the hunter safety course?
No. The law requires individuals to take the hunter safety course before they are able to buy tags or hunt.
I took the hunter safety course in another province is it valid here in Saskatchewan?
Yes it is.
I have sent my paper work into the Canadian Firearm Centre, how long does it take before I get my PAL back?
The time varies between 8 weeks and longer. Much depends on providing accurate information. One of the busiest times of the year is before and during hunting season. If you are thinking about going hunting in the fall don't wait until September to challenge the test and mail it in.
Is the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation only for people who want to hunt?
This has been a misconception of the club for as many years as it has been around. Yes the club does have both indoor and outdoor ranges for members to use and we are proud of our facilities. We are equally proud of the work we do with Ducks Unlimited and other Conservation organizations in Saskatchewan to buy land - and preserve the habitat for the wild animals, birds, and fish. We have a very active Conservation Committee that worked closely with both Ducks Unlimited and the City of Saskatoon to buy and preserve a wetlands in Southeast Saskatoon, now called the Hyde Wetlands.
What is a PAL?
The Possession and Acquisition License also known as the PAL is what the government requires you to have if you wish to own or borrow a gun, or want to buy ammunition. The PAL replaces the FAC, if you still have the FAC card you are grandfathered in and do not need to get a PAL - unless you let your FAC lapse, then you will have to challenge the test. After you have either passed the Hunter Safety Course or Challenged the test you mail the paperwork into the Canada Firearm Centre in New Brunswick.
Why are your Firearm Safety Courses drawn out over such a long period of time?
We designed the courses specifically for young people. When you sign up for the course you will receive a book and will be required to read the entire book. For some young people this may be a daunting task to ask them to read an entire book on top of their regular school work. Our job is to make sure that when they complete the test they have a thorough understanding of how to use a firearm safely and also how to stay safe in the wilderness.
For those over 17 who don't want to spend that much time spread over a long period we will be have 2 two weekend intensive courses for those who want to take the Firearm Safety Course.
I have a gun and want to go hunting but don't have a PAL. Can I still go hunting?
It is against the law to be in possession of a firearm without a PAL. If you are hunting with a gun you need a PAL. If you are archery hunting you don't need a PAL.
I want to buy a handgun, is there anything I need to know?
Saskatoon Wildlife Federation has two indoor ranges and a handgun club. You will have to show proof of membership before you will be able to possess your gun.
I have a restricted firearm and need to know the land location of the club for my transport license.
The land location is: SE 24-37-5-W3rd
I would like to get my children involved in your club what do you have to offer young people?
We are very committed to creating an atmosphere that supports and encourages young people to become involved in Saskatoon Wildlife Federation. Along those lines we have developed Firearm Safety Courses that are designed to teach young people in a supportive environment.
